GRS - Global Recycle Standard

The Global Recycle Standard (GRS) was originally developed by Control Union Certifications in 2008 and ownership was passed to the Textile Exchange (TE) on 1 January 2011. TE initiated a revision of the standard in early 2012. Its goal was to make the standard more robust, and to include new chemical requirements. An International Working Group (IWG) of Certification Bodies was developed to revise the standard. The Global Recycled Standard is an international, voluntary, full product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions.

How you benefit ?

The GRS is intended to meet the need of companies looking to verify the recycled content of their products (both finished and intermediate products) and to verify responsible social, environmental and chemical practices in the production of these products. The objectives of the GRS are to define requirements to ensure accurate content claims and good working conditions, and that harmful environmental and chemical impacts are minimised as much as possible.
Niall Services Pvt. Ltd. is the leading certification body, which has certified the majority of all certified facilities. This includes companies in ginning, spinning, weaving/knitting, dyeing & printing and stitching in more than 50 countries to OCS and GRS at the moment.

What the standard looks like ?

This standard applies to all companies that manufacture or trade GRS products. It covers processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all products that are made with a minimum of 20% recycled material. The Material Collection and Material Concentration processes are not required to be GRS certified. But they will have to declare that they have met a set of requirements, consistent with the goals of this standard, and agree to be inspected by the Certification Body on a random basis. The range of products to be certified is inspired by, but not limited to textile products.
